PIPES free acid, also known as 1,4-piperazinediethanesulfonic acid, is a Good's buffer notable for having a pKa value similar to ordinary physiological pH. As such, PIPES free acid is frequently used as a buffer in biochemical research.
PIPES free acid has found its way into a number of different areas of research owing to its buffering properties. Research on Good's buffers as a class has investigated their potential as bases of biocompatible ionic liquids as well as their efficacy for regulating pH in IVF processes. PIPES free acid has also been used as a buffering agent in studies relating to pH control in the culturing of mammalian cells.
The working pH range in aqueous solution is 6.5 - 7.5.
